(Meredith) -- A group of Rhode Island lawmakers are hoping to stop panhandling in the state.

According to WLNE, a bill introduced Wednesday allow drivers to be fined for giving money to panhandlers, making it a traffic violation.

Drivers in an active lane of travel handing out money would be subjected to the traffic ticket.

Legitimate charities can get a temporary permit and will be able to collect money on the side of the road and at stop lights.
