A 19-year-old Lovejoy man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in 2014.

Craig D. Miller was 17-years-old at the time of the shooting that occurred on July 11, 2014 in front of Sammy's Market on Madison Ave.

Police from several jurisdictions responded to the multiple 911 calls that evening and found Malik A. Garrett,16, lying on the ground suffering from three gunshot wounds.

Authorities said Garrett was alive when police arrived and was transported to a local hospital where he died one hour later.

Based on evidence from the scene and several witnesses, officers identified Miller later that evening.

An investigation revealed Miller and Garrett were involved in an ongoing dispute. Police said Miller arrived on the scene that evening and fired into the crowd that included Garrett and three other boys.

Garrett was the only one shot.

Miller was convicted by a Madison County jury on April 13, 2017. Circuit Judge Kyle Napp sentenced Miller to 40 years in prison.

He will be required to serve 100 percent of his sentence.Copyright 2017 KMOV (Meredith Corporation). All rights reserved.
