BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A 16-year-old is now charged with murder after police said he accidentally shot his friend in Belleville.
Police said Quantez Jones shot and killed Deveon L. Hunt, 18, of Belleville, while firing shots into an occupied home on Oct. 29. Officials believe the fatal shooting was accidental.
Jones was arrested at a charter school in East St. Louis. Another teen was also taken into custody. Police said both were carrying guns at the time of arrest.
Hunt was found with a fatal gunshot wound in an alley near West 76th Street and West Main Street around 10:10 p.m., Belleville police Capt. Matt Eiskent told News 4.
Hunt was alive when police first got to the scene but was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.
Linda Dowdy said she heard the gunshots, “Well I heard some screaming and hollering and then I heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.”According to the Belleville Police Department, 20 investigators with the Major Case Squad were called to the area to investigate the homicide.
Ed Ralleigh’s house faces the alley where the shooting happened. He said he was asleep at the time but woke this morning to see crime scene tape tied to his house. “It’s kind of heartbreaking you know, the kid that lost his life. My condolences definitely go out to his family,” said Ralleigh.
Jones is a juvenile but because the homicide occurred during the commission of a felony, Illinois state law allows for him to be charged as an adult. Officials have charged Jones with first-degree murder.
No one inside the home they were firing shots into was injured.
