MONROE COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A Union Pacific train slid off its tracks in Monroe County, Illinois Friday evening and took the life of one male, officials say.

Fire departments responded to Fults Road at Bluff Road for a 13-car train derailment.

According to the Monroe County Coroner's Office, 23-year-old Jonah Matthews, of Waterloo, was driving a tractor southwest across the train tracks when he got stuck and was hit by the southbound train.

Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene

The mixed freight train is carrying some hazardous materials, but the chemicals were several cars back and were not affected by the accident.

None of the train crew are injured.

The St. Clair Emergency Management Agency is sending its hazmat team to the scene.
