(Meredith) -- A Louisiana man is facing charges after a viral video shows him jumping off an interstate bridge into the river below during a traffic jam.

Jimmy Jennings, 26, got out of his car and ran across the bridge along Interstate-10 in Butte La Rose before jumping into the Atchafalaya River Basin on July 9.

A section of the interstate was closed for about four hours following a 10-vehicle pileup, KATC-TV reported.

"I jumped off the bridge, and when I hit the water, [my] shoulder went up, and I kind of hurt my shoulder, but I started swimming," Jennings told the news outlet. "I couldn't get back to the bank because the current was way too strong."

His friend, Khory Vaughan, recorded a video of Jennings taking the plunge that led to an hours-long search involving the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department and the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office.

"I stayed in the water for probably about... 2.5, 3 hours. I thought I was going to die, but God saved me," said Jennings. "Finally, all the waters went still, and I went back."

Jennings roamed the area for another hour before authorities took him into custody. He was charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespassing, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
