St. Louis City police are investigating an accident that left two injured involving an Uber driver in the Lafayette Square neighborhood Saturday.

Police initially said an Uber driver was dropping off customers near Mississippi Ave and Chouteau Ave when it’s car was struck by two vehicles believed to be racing eastbound on Chouteau just after 5:30 p.m. Police now believe only one car hit other cars, causing a chain reaction crash.

Police also initially said a driver involved in the crash fled the scene, but now believe the driver of every car involved stayed at the scene.

"They had to at least been going 90 to 100 miles an hour," said Meredith Larson, a hostess at Planter's House.

Larson says she initially saw two cars racing westbound on Chouteau Ave when they turned around, still speeding.

"About 30 seconds later," said Larson, "I could hear the cars speeding back, one of them slammed into an Uber."

That impact of the initial crash caused the Uber minivan to slam into several other parked cars near the restaurant. Witnesses said the impact was so loud and big that it caused the building to shake.

"Our owner was inside the basement and he felt it," Larson said.

One of the cars totaled in the incident belongs to Hugh Anderson, who was inside of Planter's House on a first date.

"I thought I had a good parking spot tonight right in front of the bar," he said, "it's ironic."

Witnesses told News 4 that two people, including the Uber driver, were injured and transported to a local hospital.

"It's frightening to think that those people especially that sat down in that Uber," said Larson, "I mean all three of them could have died in an instant."

A 26-year-old involved in the wreck is charged with possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana, traffic citations for improper lane usage, careless and reckless driving by accident, driving while an operator's license is suspended and operating a motor vehicle without maintaining financial responsibility.
