TROY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Troy mayor Allen Adomite has come up with an idea to keep homeowners protected against becoming victims of contractor scams.

Homeowner Paul Labrout has experienced storm damage to his home and is worried about finding the right person to fix his home and the cost.

“I’ve seen a lot of people get ripped off bad, lose thousands of dollars,” Labrout said.

Adomite is proposing an ordinance that will require construction and roofing companies to provide licenses and insurance, so homeowners can ask for the contractor’s city registration.

“We know that there are going to be those that come to our town that don’t meet those standards, so we hope that we’re going to help them make that good choice,” he said.

For legitimate contractors, this ordinance hits the nail on the head.

"I think it should be a national thing actually, it would be nice for us contractors who care for the homeowner,” said Greg Wood of Gallagher Brothers Construction.

Adomite said the registration will be free for contractors. The ordinance will be brought up at a board meeting on Monday March 6.
