Tropical Liqueurs, better known as "Trops" will reopen in the Grove sometime in May.
It is the second time this bar is trying to make St. Louis home. The first time, it opened it's doors in Soulard in 2015. After several neighbors complained of rowdy customers and noise, the bar closed. Now, they are hoping for a fresh start in the Grove.
"This is a neighborhood that has always celebrated diversity and inclusion," said Billy Thompson, managing officer of Trops in the Grove.
The doors are set to open sometime in May, and the new spot is already taking shape.
"We've also tripled our size," said Thompson.
Thompson says he hopes the Grove is a better fit, being surrounded by other bars that are open until 3:00 a.m. Although Trops will only stay open until 1:30 a.m.
One of the complaints from neighbors in Soulard was over people walking out of the bars with their drinks and littering in the road.
"People have that misconception that you can take drinks to go and we are absolutely not that," said Thompson.
To combat that issue, the bar removed part of the roof of their building to create a 2,000 sq./ft. courtyard. Guests can access the all-year-round space through garage doors.
"That's why we wanted to bring in the garage doors, so we could bring the outdoors inside," said Thompson.
The new Trops location will also have food. The bar is partnering with Guerrilla Street Food, hoping tropical drinks pair well with Filipino-inspired food.
"We'll offer what's appropriate for the season and what's available locally, and what kind of speaks to what Trops is doing that day, whatever kind of special drinks they're making," said Brian Hardesty, co-founder of Guerrilla Street Food.
The other Trops locations are in Springfield and Columbia.
