ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- As temperatures drop and influenza season begins to take hold, health professionals are watching COVID-19 cases very closely.

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Missouri and Illinois continue to rise, and Missouri's rate of positive tests has sharply increased in October.

In the St. Louis area, health officials are closely monitoring hospitalizations and hospital bed availability as the winter months begin, and to this point, the region appears to have adequate capacity.

The average number of new daily cases in the region held steady for a time, but spiked heavily in July. After jumping from roughly 200 cases per day to more than 600 cases per day during the heat of summer, the increase leveled off before climbing again in October. Some of the increase is due to testing being more widely available across the region.

In the St. Louis area, St. Louis County, St. Louis City and St. Clair County have seen the most cases. St. Louis County has recorded the highest numbers of deaths.

That trend has held true statewide, as Missouri's daily cases took a jump over the summer and leveled out at the higher totals heading into the colder months.

Illinois has seen many more cases than Missouri, and has seen about three times as much testing.

More than 6.7 million tests have been conducted in Illinois and the state has seen a 96% recovery rate.

The number of cases reported on the Illinois side of News 4's viewing area also continues to grow.

Nationally, the number of cases continues to grow at a quick rate, each day. The below map shows which states have the most cases.
