WEST ALTON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police have captured a suspect who stole a car with a 2-year-old inside it last month.

The incident occurred on August 23 and happened at a Pit Stop gas station in West Alton around 10:00 p.m., causing a massive police presence at Highway 67 and Highway 94.

According to police, 18-year-old Morocco Tompson-Bey allegedly entered the running car and sped off while both parents were inside the convenience store.

Kaitlyn Branham works at the service station, and witnessed the parents' emotional reaction when they realized their child was left inside the stolen vehicle.

"Next thing I know [the mother] is screaming, 'My baby, my baby is in that car," said Branham.

Around 11:00 p.m., the car, a black Scion, was recovered at Auburn Drive and Halls Ferry in Jennings, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

The toddler was unharmed, but the suspect fled.

Whether the parents will face charges for leaving the 2-year-old unattended the car is still under investigation. Thompson-Bey has been charged with felony stealing a motor vehicle.

He is being held on a $100,000 cash only bond.
