Suspect hiding in closet with knife fatally shot by deputy in Alton is identified

ALTON, Ill. ( – A suspect who was shot and killed by a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Alton Friday morning has been identified.

Officials said the Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force was at the house in the 3500 block of Omega to arrest a suspect who violated bond from a previous federal drug charge. A warrant was issued for the suspect’s arrest on Jan. 18 and the Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force was assigned to the case Jan. 26.

When deputies went to the home to arrest the suspect, the man, identified Monday as Matthew Zimmerman, 42, was found hiding in a closet. According to the U.S. Marshals' office, Zimmerman had a knife, which he tried to use against law enforcement. The suspect also reportedly made threats using the knife.

After finding Zimmerman with the knife, a deputy with the U.S. Marshals' Office shot the suspect.

No other injuries were reported.

The Illinois State Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting.
