First responders on WB I-44 at Memorial following a crash.

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – One man was killed following a crash on Interstate 44 in downtown St. Louis Friday.

The westbound lanes were closed near Memorial and Walnut around 11 a.m. Friday. Officers told News 4 that a 2016 Ford Escape was going westbound on I-44 when it hit a trailer that was hauled by a 2017 Dodge Ram that had broken down on the interstate near Walnut.

A 26-year-old man and 38-year-old Lonnie Jones, of St. Peters, who had been inside the Dodge Ram were pedestrians on the highway when the accident happened. Both men and the driver of the Ford Escape were injured and taken to a hospital, where Jones was pronounced dead. The 23-year-old man and driver of the Ford Escape were listed in stable condition.

Traffic was backed up through the Broadway-Cass area shortly after the interstate was closed. Accident reconstruction was called to the scene to investigate.
