ST. LOUIS ( -- Missouri finds itself on a travel list alongside The Maldives, Kyoto, Tel Aviv and Nassau in the latest issue of the Wall Street Journal’s destination list for 2019.

In the article, titled “The 10 Most Intriguing Travel Destinations for 2019,” Missouri is ranked number six thanks in large part to St. Louis’ recent renaissance.

The author, WSJ’s Christian Wright, calls St. Louis a “fast-growing tech hub” and praises the city’s commitment to expanding greenways and connecting its rivers and parks.

Also prominently featured is the Gateway Arch National Park renovation, which connects St. Louis’ downtown to the signature structure of the city.

While the Arch is an obvious draw, it was actually something that's not yet open or operating that got St. Louis on the list.

The Last Hotel is mentioned as an accommodation attraction, set to open soon in the International Shoe Company headquarters building.

"We are currently in the process of building a 142-room hotel, with a swimming pool on the rooftop," said Jason Gifford, general manager of The Last Hotel.

The hotel will open in April of 2019 on Washington Avenue.

"It's indicative of what this city is doing, which is building the downtown area, especially here in the Washington Avenue Garment District," Gifford said.

It's no mistake St. Louis finds itself mentioned on a list like this, as marketing the city has been a major focus of organizations like Explore St. Louis over the last two years.

"We actually go out, we meet with journalists, we talk about the vibrancy of this community," said Brian Hall, director of marketing for Explore St. Louis. "Then we invite them in to experience St. Louis first hand.
