JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) – Friday afternoon traffic in the southern area of the metro has come to a standstill due to a massive semi-truck fire on Interstate 49.

The fire is located just south of Red Bridge Road.

Crews from the Kansas City Fire Department and the Belton Fire Department are at the scene to aid in the response.

Markel Johnson with the Missouri Department of Transportation told KCTV5 News that both northbound and southbound lanes of traffic have been shut down due to the fire.

Southbound drivers are being directed off at Redbridge Road while northbound traffic is being directed off to Blue Ridge Road.

Johnson also said that MoDOT does not know at this time what the tanker truck was carrying. He also noted that officials are unaware of the current status of the truck driver.

The response to this fire is expected to last for many hours.
