Preston Talbot

Authorities said Preston Talbot, 27, failed to pay tolls in the amount of $5,473.07.

(Meredith) - A Texas man dodged paying nearly $5,500 in toll fees after installing a device that hid his license plate at the touch of a button, authorities said.

Deputies arrested Preston Talbot, 27, for failing to pay a toll on the Sam Houston Expressway on Thursday. During the traffic stop, deputies discovered that Talbot was in possession of a "license plate flipper."

“He would activate this device, putting a flipper down in front of his license plate, so the cameras at toll plazas couldn’t read his plate,” Harris County Constable Mark Herman told KHOU-TV.

Herman said the driver owes $5,473 in unpaid tolls.

Talbot's mother told the station it was just a "stupid mistake."

While the devices are advertised and sold online, they are illegal to possess in Texas.
