Students of one of St. Louis’s largest school districts are working to ease hunger among their own classmates.

The Parkway School District established a district-wide food pantry this year at Northeast Middle School in Creve Coeur.

Students organize the food, stock the shelves and pack food care packages.

Many admit they didn’t know hunger was a real problem in their neighborhoods.

“At first I didn’t realize there were so many people who need the food but now I do and it’s great to help out,” said seventh grader Jennifer Melaned.

Parkway Counselors say that one-in-five parkway students experience some sort of food insecurity.
