U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill joked she's avoiding hugs for a while after suffering a broken rib at a Democratic caucus luncheon.

Earlier this week, McCaskill attended a luncheon with Senate Democrats and began choking on a piece of food during the event, according to the Washington Post.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia rushed over to give her the Heimlich maneuver.

Although Manchin's quick thinking was helpful, it left McCaskill injured.

“I’m really grateful to Joe – a little bit of a sore rib for a couple of weeks is no big deal," said McCaskill in a statement.
