Drivers are gearing up for slowdowns and delays as the Martin Luther King Bridge has closed for a year.
During that time, crews will be making major repairs to multiple ramps and bridge approaches.
Ronnie Foster is a delivery driver and uses the bridge several times each week for work.
“I am going to be sad because we work until our work is done and if a bridge is closed then it's longer time in traffic,” said Foster.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging drivers to allow plenty of time, especially for morning and evening commutes. Drivers are advised to use the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, Poplar Street Bridge, or Jefferson Barracks bridge as alternate routes.
Like many, Foster is preparing to spend more time in traffic.
“It's longer time in traffic and on the highways and a longer time getting off,” said Foster
The $36 million dollar project has been six years in the making.
The project is expected to be complete in the Fall of 2019.
