Pedal the Cause is a few months away but for those battling cancer, the fight continues every day.
One cancer survivor is now using his experience with his dog by his side, to help others battling the disease.
Doug Mars was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, “My ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialist) called me and said I hate to inform you but you have cancer.”
Mars went through 28 rounds of radiation to his vocal cord.
“Swallowing was like swallowing glass, that’s what it felt like. Pretty difficult stuff,” said Mars.
Mars says he discovered Pedal the Cause while scrolling through the internet.
“I was scrolling through the internet and Pedal the Cause popped up,” said Mars.
Doug Mars told his wife he would participate. He created a team that includes his son but had difficulty finding a name for his team.
“As I was going through treatment, I slept on the couch a lot. By my side was my dog, Rex who’s my big black dog. So my team name is Ride BBD,” said Mars.
The name Ride BBD stands for Ride Big Black Dog. Since 2016, Doug Mars has raised more than $15,000 for cancer research. This year, he is riding for an 8-year-old named Gabe.
In February 2016, Mars was declared cancer free!
