ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A man has been convicted for killing a 21-month-old child in North County in July 2016.

Vincent Jones was convicted on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse.

Police said officers were called to a home in the 2500 block of Pershall Road. When police arrived, they found 21-month-old John Wilbourne suffering from injuries to his head and torso.

The child was rushed to a St. Louis-area hospital, where he died.

According to court documents, Wilbourne had extensive abdominal injuries that were not accidental, a large tear in his liver and a substantial amount of blood in his abdomen. The Medical Examiner said the injuries were caused by child abuse.

The child’s mother told police her son seemed fine when she left the home around 7:20 a.m. on the day of his death.

Jones was convicted on Friday. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
