(Meredith) – A disturbing video shows a man dragging a dead raccoon into a San Francisco McDonald’s and placing the bloody carcass on a table, startling customers.

The bizarre event unfolded just before 7 a.m. Sunday, prompting the fast food restaurant to shut down for five hours to disinfect the dining area, KGO-TV reported.

Chris Brooks, who recorded the video, told the station he went to McDonald’s to grab breakfast when things took a turn.

“I’m standing at the counter and a guy comes in yelling, ‘Help, help, help!’” said Brooks.

He and other customers ran to dining area, where they noticed an unidentified man holding the raccoon.

“I didn’t know if the raccoon was dead or alive,” said Brooks. “My thought was to get out of the way.”

Another customer reportedly took the animal outside and threw it in a trashcan. Health inspectors later removed the raccoon from the restaurant’s property.

Responding officers gave the man a mental health evaluation and determined he did not meet the criteria for psychiatric detention, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He was then released.

McDonald’s said in a statement that the state’s health department cleared the restaurant to reopen after it sanitized the dining room.
