CAHOKIA, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called to assist Cahokia police after a body was found in a dumpster Tuesday.
Crime scene tape was seen around the dumpster outside of apartment buildings in the 100 block of Jerome and police confirm a resident at the apartment complex discovered a corpse inside around 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Teresa Bryant was dropping off trash in the dumpster when she saw a comforter inside.
It seemed out of place, and when she tried to move it she came face to face with a grisly scene.
“And when I got it loose it was a face covered in plastic!" Bryant said. “Stuff around here doesn't happen that way. It doesn't happen like that around here."
Bryant has lived at the apartment complex for six years and said there have never been any issues before Tuesday.
"nothing like this has ever happened here," she said.
Illinois State Police had their forensics team on the scene and investigators eventually put the entire dumpster on a flatbed and carried it away.
Bryant said she is certain trash crews had emptied the dumpster Monday and the body was likely put there overnight.
"Someone needs to pay for it, that's what I say," Bryant added. “I saw his face beneath the plastic. That's somebody's son or brother or uncle."
The investigation is still in the early stages and no further information has been released.
