Jailed for weeks over a traffic ticket is what thousands of residents in St. Louis County are facing.
Michael-John Voss with the Arch City Defenders says in some cases people were jailed for more than 80 days for a traffic citation,
Recent victories include settlements against towns such as Jennings, Velda City, and St. Ann, where they’ve agreed to stop piling on the fees.
Currently, cities like Arnold, Bel-Ridge, St. John, Maplewood, and Florissant have pending federal cases.
Florissant resident Meredith Walker says she’s been jailed at least 15 times in the last six years.
Voss says they litigate these cases through the federal court system so that the federal government can monitor the municipalities.
