Lincoln County man once convicted for murdering wife acquitted in re-trial

Russell Faria was acquitted Friday after facing a new trial for allegedly fatally stabbing his wife in Lincoln County. He was previously convicted in the case, but a judge ordered a new trial

TROY, Mo. (AP) — An eastern Missouri man once convicted of murder in his wife's 2011 stabbing death was acquitted in a re-trial.

Russell Faria was acquitted in a bench trial bench trial that began Monday in Lincoln County. St. Louis Circuit Judge Steven Ohmer decided the case.

Prosecutors argued that an enraged Faria stabbed wife Betsy Faria. Russell Faria's attorney countered that the killing was carried out by one of the victim's friends seeking to collect on a $150,000 life insurance policy.

Ohmer ordered the new trial after ruling that newly discovered evidence could produce a different outcome.
