ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An infant and his 26-year-old mother were killed in a crash on Highway 61 in St. Charles County Thursday morning.

According to police, Miranda Jercick was driving northbound with an infant in the car when she lost control of the vehicle. Her car flipped over into the median and slid into the southbound lanes.

A woman was driving south at the time and Jercick's car collided with hers, killing Jercick, who was not wearing a seatbelt. Though the baby was wearing a safety harness, he was also killed.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital with what Missouri Highway Patrol classified as moderate injuries.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. near Route P and the road was closed until 10 a.m.

Residents who live near the stretch of road where the accident happened say it's a deadly area of the highway.

"There's been a lot of deaths on it that I know of," said a woman named Zola who lives near the scene. "You just have an uneasy feeling when you try to get on it."

In January of 2016, a mother and her two daughters were killed in a crash on 61, and MoDOT has estimated there are crashes on 61 every two days. They're in the middle of a project installing overpasses and median cables try and make it safer.

They expect work to be finished by next summer.
