The Jerseyville home of a six-year-old boy, now dead of alleged starvation, was visited by state officials back in January 2016.
The Department of Child and Family Services told News 4 they responded to a hotline complaint about "inadequate food in the home."
A DCFS spokesperson says a pediatric specialist concluded the child's weight was the result of a medical condition and the case was closed.
Authorities in Jersey County now say the six-year-old apparently died from starvation.
Michael and Georgena Roberts are now charged with first-degree murder and endangering the life and health of a child.
Police say it appears the lack of food was a form of punishment.
A seven-year-old, also in the home, is suffering from severe malnourishment, according to documents, and is still hospitalized.
DCFS says they have taken custody of five children and placing them with relatives.
