HILLSDALE, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A Hillsdale police chief received a disturbing call about human remains being found at a construction site.

“Scared, worried, like what do we have?” said Herb Simmons, Hillsdale Police Chief.

It happened on January 13 as Ameren crews were working on a new construction site on Rosebud Avenue.

“They were in the field, one of their trucks were stuck and got down and found what appeared to be a leg bone,” said Simmons.

On Thursday morning, crime scene units, cadaver dogs, and a medical examiner converged on the field to search for more remains. Authorities said they also found a skull.

“I don’t know much yet until the medical examiner finishes their stuff, but they feel pretty confident that this stuff is very old,” said Simmons.

The medical examiner's office says the remains definitely fall into the category of historic and they will do several tests. They also say the empty lot is close to one of the state's oldest cemeteries. The office also says they brought someone from Greenwood Cemetery to check the remains.

“She’s confident that these bones aren’t from the cemetery either,” said Simmons.

The medical examiner’s office said it will be quite some time before they learn what happened to these bones and when.
