ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A high school football game Friday night between Althoff Catholic and Centralia got very physical with numerous personal fouls being called.
One particular play late in the game involved Centralia senior kicker Logan Lauder getting hit following a kick. He lays on the ground afterward while a flag is thrown from the referee.
Lauder returns to the game shortly after for the ensuing kickoff. But his parents are extremely upset.
“My kid’s on the ground and can’t talk,” Logan’s father, John Lauder, said. “At that point we didn’t know what type of damage they’d done to him. We didn’t know if his neck was broke. We didn’t know what had happened to him. And it took him a while to get up.”
“It’s disturbing to me,” Logan’s mother, Maria Lauder, said. “The reason why we’re speaking today is we don’t want the next player that plays against Althoff to get hurt, (go to) the hospital with a broken neck or broken leg. That’s why we’re speaking out today. It’s safety in football. I’m sorry. I totally understand it’s a contact sport. I know kids are going to get hurt. But to do it intentionally and maliciously that’s where I have a problem.”
Centralia officials tell us “numerous” personal fouls were called against Althoff Catholic Friday night.
“As an administrator I have contacted the Althoff administration. (Althoff Catholic principal David) Harris and I spoke at length Monday afternoon about the game, the hit and other issues regarding that particular game,” Centralia principal Reid Shipley said.
Althoff Catholic released a statement to News 4:“The game last Friday night was a very heated rivalry between the two teams. The play in question was flagged and the penalty enforced. The referees upon consulting did not feel the play constituted an ejection of the player. Our coach on his own accord immediately removed our player from the field and did not allow him to return to the field of action for the rest of the game. We at Althoff Catholic were glad to see that the Centralia player was able to return to the game for the ensuing kickoff. The Administration and Athletic Department is taking the matter under review.”Copyright 2016 KMOV (Meredith Corporation). All rights reserved.
