Two high schools who are rivals on the court teamed up Friday to support a teacher with cancer.

Hundreds dressed in pink at a basketball game between Collinsville High School and Belleville West to support Collinsville math teacher Kelley Liljegren, who has been fighting cancer for 13 years.

“In my freshman year, she went through chemo again and she missed one day a week. Just seeing her strength and how she didn’t let that affect her in the classroom was just something I don’t think I could do myself,” said Collinsville senior Sam Vlasak.

A group known as KAHOKstrong organized the effort to show Liljegren she’s not alone. Before the game, students formed a giant K for Kelley.

“My mom is a breast cancer survivor and she helped get the idea of this game rolling. I couldn’t be more proud of her and how the community came together,” said Collinsville junior Morgane Ash.

Liljegren wasn’t at the game because she received treatment on Friday, but organizers said she is grateful for all the support.
