A student at Hazelwood East High School was taken to the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center on Thursday after bringing a gun to school.

Another student saw on social media that a 16-year-old brought a gun to school and notified school authorities.

That then led administrators to the student who was then taken away by police, according to Director of Communications, Kimberly McKenzie. The student's parents have been contacted.

The school was placed on a type of lockdown referred to as an "academic shelter" during the search. Students were unable to walk in the hallways.

Police said the student in question had a semi-automatic handgun.
