ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) --Authorities in south St. Louis are investigating an accidental death that happened in the drive-thru of the Jack in the Box on South Grand Wednesday night.

Police say 20-year-old Charles Wood Jr., of Velda City, Mo., was at the drive-thru of the fast food restaurant just after 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

According to the investigation, Wood pulled up to the window at an angle. While attempting to get his food from the worker, he opened his door and leaned out of the car to reach for the food since he was too far away from the window.

When Wood did this, police say his car was in reverse. While he reached for the food he step on the accelerator, causing his car to go backwards and strike a tree, pinning Woods between the car and the tree.

The impact of the crash caused serious injuries to the Woods’ head, neck torso and legs. He was transported to a local hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Friends said he was always somebody they could depend on.

"Everybody loved him. We're just taking it day by day," said friend James Woods. "I'm so used to him texting me first thing in the morning. I didn't get that text this morning. I just sat in bed and started crying."

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Police are calling it an accidental death.
