ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - First responders pride themselves on being prepared to respond to anything. Firefighters from multiple departments got together Friday today to train together in responding to a particular crisis.

Firefighters in response training in parking garage

Firefighters remove a mock victim in the form of a dummy as part of their first response training Friday.

The training was in the Brentwood area and was a mock parking garage collapse. Firefighters worked to free victims trapped under concrete but also had to monitor and mitigate hazardous waste.

Fire officials say approaching a disaster like this is different than what they're used to.

"This is very much a defensive operation for us we're used to offense operations,” said Assistant Chief Ronnie Cottrell. “We go mitigate a fire and help as quick as possible.”

Today was the culmination of a week of training exercises between multiple area departments.
