ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A man accused of getting into a fatal accident while fleeing police is facing charges.

Traveon Smith, 22, is charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to authorities, he was involved in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at Natural Bridge and Fair around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Offices spotted  driver of a convertible, allegedly Smith, reportedly running stop signs near West Florissant and Adelaide. There were two adults and a child in the vehicle.

The officers reportedly turned on their lights and followed the vehicle, which ran a stop light at Fair and Natural Bridge and crashed into an SUV. The SUV then rolled over and hit a building in the 4100 block of Natural Bridge, police said.

The driver of that SUV, the only one inside, was killed in the crash. He was later identified as 68-year-old Joseph Powell.

Smith allegedly fled the scene but was found a couple blocks away and taken into custody. The two adults and the baby who were in the convertible were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The baby was in the car seat.

Police did not say whether the car was stolen or if they had another reason to follow the driver other than the traffic violations.
