(WLOS/CNN) - A dog gave birth to a lime green puppy, but the color will eventually fade. In the meantime, you can still call him Hulk.

Shana Stamey and her family knew their white German Shepherd, Gypsy, would have puppies soon. They all entered the world Friday morning.

Gypsy had a litter of eight, and all went as expected until the fourth one came along.

"I started freaking out because it was green," said Stamey, who lives in Canton, North Carolina.

Stamey said, except for the color, everything went fine with Gypsy’s first litter.

“She's done really good. She's a good mom," Stamey said.

Dog gives birth to lime green puppy; family names him Hulk

A dog gave birth to a lime green puppy, but the color will eventually fade. In the meantime, you can still call him Hulk.

But why do some puppies come out green, like Hulk?

The rare phenomenon is thought to happen when light-colored puppies come in contact with meconium, or green bile. It essentially dyes their fur in the womb, and the color fades over time.

“I knew it wasn't like harmful, but I still had to look it up again to make sure,” said Stamey.

Aside from Hulk, she occasionally calls the puppy Mr. Green and considers him a "good luck charm."

As the color starts to fade, however, some suggested "Pikachu" would be a more appropriate name.

Stamey said she will look for loving families to adopt the pups when they're old enough.
