Kirkwood police are investigating an armed robbery that happened Friday night around 11:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Argonne Drive. Police said this kind of crime is unusual, especially in the neighborhood where it happened.
"We don't have armed robberies very often at all in the city of Kirkwood," said officer Gary Baldridge.
The victim's wife spoke with News 4 but didn't want to give her name or her husband's out of fear for their safety. She said her husband was walking home after meeting friends in downtown Kirkwood when the robber stepped out from behind a tree, pointed a gun and demanded the victim's belongings. He complied and ran away unharmed.
A neighbor who talked with the victim's wife and lives near the crime scene said the crime has the woman's family shaken up.
"She is really very freaked out because he has all of their personal information from his wallet," said Diane Gorman who lives near the crime scene.
As either a threat or a taunt, two hours after the crime, Gorman says the robber used the victim's phone to send his wife a text message that read, "Shut the f--- up."
Police don't have much to go on other than a description of the robber as an African-American male with short dreadlocks.
Officer Baldridge said, "Detectives are following up on every angle possible."
Gorman said she and the victim's wife believe the crime is a reminder that people need to be alert no matter where they live.
"Be aware. If something doesn't look right, call police," she said.
