BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A German restaurant and brewery that was supposed to open during the summer of 2016 in the Metro East is still under construction.
There have been recent signs of new life at the Hofbräuhaus construction site off of Illinois 15 in Belleville. Years ago, a $32 million tax incentive was approved for the project and the city council agreed to spend more than $2 million to extend sewer lines to the site.
The $12 million project will be a game changer for Belleville, city leaders said. An Alderman said the developers proposed hotels, restaurants and a soccer park for the site but the Hofbräuhaus is the only thing currently under construction.
News4 wanted to know what's the hold up?
“It’s hard to find any information. I’ve asked on the city council floor and the mayor for updates,” Alderman Mike Buettner said.
The contractor, Matt Stukenberg told News 4 they ran into delays during construction.
"Obviously there were some delays, once we got everything corrected we were able to progress," said Stukenberg.
Stukenberg wouldn’t specify what those delays were.
Mayor Mark Eckert's office told News 4 “he’s pleased with the progress” but Buettner wants answers.
“I’m disappointed in the council and I’m disappointed with the administration,” Buettner said. “We need to have some people on the council stand up and ask the questions and get behind me and say, ‘look, we want it to be successful but we want some answers.’”
Buettner said he expects another completion date to be announced in early 2018.
There are currently only seven Hofbräuhaus locations in the United States.
