(Meredith/CNN/WBBM) -- A 5-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a Chicago neighborhood on Saturday morning. The victim's mother was taken into custody.
The victim, Serenity Arrington, suffered stab wounds and died shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
Neighbors said the woman, identified as 27-year-old Simone Austin, taken into custody is the child's mother, but police only stated they believe the girl and woman in custody are related.
Other neighbors said Austin had recently suffered a family loss and was dealing with depression or had mental health issues.
Chicago Police said they have received multiple calls for service at the home before, but provided no specifics on what those calls were.
Austin is facing one count of first degree murder.
