ST. LOUIS CITY, Mo. (KMOV) - A 27-year-old man accused of speeding down a St. Louis City street to evade police allegedly struck and killed a man Saturday.

Just past midnight, police spotted a 27-year-old man driving a Ford Taurus in an ‘erratic manner’ on Goodfellow near Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. When officers tried to pull him over, the driver sped off. According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the officers stopped pursuing the car but followed at a significant distance.

Moments later, the car was found crashed near Academy Avenue near Dr. Martin Luther King Drive as the driver tried to run away. Officers ordered the man to stop but he was ultimately tased before being taken into custody.

Bystanders then flagged down officers to injured 59-year-old Andre Adams who was lying on the sidewalk. Adams, who was hit by the driver, was taken to the hospital where he later died.

“Was the life worth pursuing somebody for erratic driving?” Adolphus Pruitt said. He is the president of the St. Louis Area NAACP said.

“Erratic driving creates fatal accidents. W have 42 already this year,” St. Louis Public Safety Director Dan Isom said. He says chase protocols are still an ongoing conversation between city leaders and the police.

“If we don’t try to pull these people over if we don’t at least make the attempt and try to manage them in the safest way possible, what is the alternative in terms of ... when it comes to public safety?” Isom said. “That is a very difficult question to answer.”

The suspect was also admitted to the hospital. News 4 will not identify the suspect until charges have been applied.

“In each case, the assailant is just as much at fault as the police. Only difference is the assailant is somebody we don’t have much control over. The police we do,” Pruitt said.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay for Adams funeral expenses.
