ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A man was hit and killed while crossing the street at Grand and Juniata Friday night, police said.

Officers responded to a call for a pedestrian struck on South Grand and Juniata around 9:10 p.m. Police said witnesses saw a black SUV speeding southbound on South Grand and running a red light at Juniata. The SUV hit the pedestrian using the crosswalk and fled the scene.

“They actually passed somebody, and hit him, and threw him in the air,” a witness said.

Officials said the man was taken to SLU hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified.

According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police, there were 507 car accidents reported in the South Grand and surrounding neighborhoods in 2020. The South Grand community has been pushing for changes for years, asking for more speed enforcement and a speed tracking sign, but they say they have received few responses from City Hall.

News 4 has reached out to the city and has not yet heard back.
