(WEEK) - Illinois’ Democratic governor said Monday night that his state will remain a “beacon for reproductive freedom.”

JB Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton released statements on social media after the website Politico posted what it said was a draft opinion overturning the 1973 case Roe V. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide.

Pritizker released the following statement:

“Let me be clear: this has always been the GOP’s ultimate goal. For a party that claims to be about freedom, Republicans can’t wait to deprive millions of women the right to choose.

As long as I’m governor, Illinois will stay a beacon for reproductive freedom.

We won’t go back.”

Lt. Gov. Stratton released this comment:

“I am absolutely furious.

Making abortion illegal doesn’t mean women will stop getting abortions. It just means more will be at risk.

Abortion is healthcare. Here in Illinois, we are doing everything we can to protect reproductive rights.”

The draft opinion was signed by Justice Samuel Alito, according to Politico. Alito is a member of the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. He was appointed by former President George W. Bush.
