Around 4:30PM police came barreling into the neighborhood of Stone Ridge Canyon surrounding the home at 210 Niagra Drive. Entrance to the neighborhood was blocked as well as any access beyond 216 Niagra Drive. Residents at 207 Niagra Drive state they were asked to evacuate through the back of their home and find safety. Other residents were not permitted outside their home and were informed there was open gunfire at the residence of 210 Niagra Drive. A young boy named Collin (14) was taken from the home by a stretcher with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. Police attempted to negotiate with the residents of 210 Niagra Drive for several minutes. SWAT entered the neighborhood and backed their vehicle into the driveway of 210 Niagra Drive. A "Bomb Bot" was used and sent to the home to determine where the people inside the home to attempt a breech. SWAT also surrounded the home from behind. Negotiating continued; police ensured the resident that friends and neighbors were concerned about the woman inside, the woman being the mother which neighbors claim had shot the boy and eventually took her own life.

Police are still at the scene now and have taped off the area. Residents are allowed from their homes but thru traffic to the 200 area is still closed off.

This is a corner used by BI STATE & ST.LOUIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS, yet no caution tape. The pole is no longer in the ground. It is broken into three pieces. When I called about it, I was told by STL POLICE that AMEREN deemed it safe for my child to stand next to it to await his bus. I believe this to be child endangerment. What do you think?

Approximately 50 St. Louis children are learning the importance of saving money thanks to Kingdom House, an organization in which 83 percent of its clients live below the poverty line of $22,300 per year for a family of four.

Financial Representatives and staff from Northwestern Mutual – Clayton teach classes at the Kingdom House Academy where students learn the basics of financial planning, how to use a checkbook, debit and credit cards, as well as short-and long-term saving strategies.

As a result, Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, is recognizing Northwestern Mutual - Clayton with its 2013 Community Impact Award. The annual regional award recognizes Northwestern Mutual offices that demonstrate exemplary service with a local nonprofit. In addition, the award secures a $50,000 grant for Kingdom House.

For more than 10 years, the office has helped with various volunteer opportunities such as food drives, the annual golf tournament or teaching classes at the Kingdom House Academy.

“Our office’s mission statement includes the phrase every life matters,” said Steve Gross, managing partner, Northwestern Mutual – Clayton. “Kingdom House shares that belief, which is a driving reason why our employees participate so wholeheartedly in its events.”

The $50,000 grant will be used to expand financial literacy courses, as well as help create Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) for the students. With these accounts, students are encouraged to save money toward college. Kingdom House will match 50 percent of their savings.

“Northwestern Mutual – Clayton has been a tremendous friend to Kingdom House for the past 10 years,” said Scott Walker, executive director, Kingdom House. “As a direct result of the office, thousands of youth in St. Louis have been nurtured and strengthened in their growth and development.”

With the grant, Kingdom House Academy will expand its offerings to increase the amount of students served by the program from 25 to 50.

“Poverty is a systemic problem in many communities across the United States, and we're enthused by the holistic approach that Northwestern Mutual – Clayton is taking with Kingdom House Academy,” said John Kordsmeier, president, Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “Their combination of volunteer hours and financial support of this important organization is not only resulting in a better quality of life for many, but it's an approach that can be replicated, regardless of the city.”
