An abandoned male mallard attracted the wild mallards into our neighborhood. He is the only one that is unable to fly. (Poor guy, he was an Easter reject.) We all love them and a lot of us put out cracked corn for them. Someone tried to have them trapped and relocated, but a female's eggs hatched in the mean time, so now they are protected. Last year I was fortunate to have a mom and 8 babies living in my garden. There is a small pond that has minnows and algae in it every year. The little ones can swim as well. This year, I have a nest with eggs. The garden is up next to the front of my home and I can look out the bottom floor window and see everything. They should hatch in about a week. I am honored they choose my home to make their homes.
