ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) --  Traffic lights threw one driver for a loop Saturday, resulting in an accident.

The crash happened when a driver coming down walnut street in downtown St. Louis thought the two traffic lights at Memorial Drive were green, that wasn’t the case.

After several complaints, News 4 went to the St. Louis Streets Department with residents’ concerns, and now changes are being made.

The streets department says these lights are out of sync three times a day to adjust for traffic volume.

Monday, it added an extra second to the red lights to help fix the problem.

“It takes away some of the difference by eating that second up,” said Streets director Todd Waelterman. “It only takes 10-15 minutes to sync up when it’s out of wack.  So, just a second, that might take away a third of the difference.”

Despite this change, the streets department says the best thing drivers can do is slow down and pay more attention.
