Raw: Suspect crashes after a shooting officer, chase in Fairview Heights

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV)—Detectives with the Illinois State Police are investigating after a suspect opened fire on an officer during a traffic stop in Fairview Heights on Tuesday.

According to the officials, the suspect was pulled over for an unspecified offense at the intersection of Highway 50 and Bunham Road around 3 a.m.

After running the identification of the suspect, the officer called for K9 units.

As the officer was returning to the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect pulled out a weapon and opened fire, striking the officer in the hand.

The officer returned fire and hit the suspect as he fled.

Police said a 21-year-old female was inside the suspect’s vehicle, but her involvement in the incident was unknown.

Authorities began chasing the suspect in Fairview Heights. It ended in Centreville after the suspect crashed into a garage on Pershing Street.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene of the crash. Police did not say if the female passenger was arrested.
