(KMOV) -- One man is dead after he was thrown from his scooter during a wreck on Interstate 270 near West Florissant on Monday.

According to authorities, the accident happened around on westbound I-270 just east of Washington Street and N. Elizabeth Avenue around 10:30 p.m.

Police said Dorman Pentacost, 47, of Creve Coeur, was driving his scooter slowly on I-270 after he started experiencing mechanical problems.

Authorities said Robert Kitt, 46, of Mountain View, was driving behind him at a high rate of speed and struck Pentacost, throwing him from the scooter.

Pentacost was pronounced dead on the scene.

Florissant police continue to investigate and it is not known if charges will be filed.

All but one lane of westbound I-270 was closed, but all lanes have since reopened.
