ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- St. Louis’ mayoral candidates Monday morning bagan an important and necessary step towards getting elected. It’s the first day candidates could file for office and Mayor Slay was the first in line.

As the mayor seeks a fourth term, many believe he could face his stiffest competition yet in the March primary.

Mayor Slay arrived at the Board of Election Commissioners Office at 7:30 a.m. to file. The first person to file gets their name first on the ballot.

While Monday was the first day to file, candidates have until early January to officially register. The primary election for mayor, comptroller, and odd-numbered wards is March 5.

The mayor’s filing for the election has been in the works for some time now. Representatives from his team have been holding his place in line.

It’s a process where someone must be physically present at all times Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. There are breaks built in as well.
