VELDA CITY (KMOV.com) – A Velda City man has been arrested after police say he shot bullets in the air while celebrating New Year’s.

The Velda City Police Department says the man was caught as he was firing an AK-47 and AR15 in his backyard just after 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities say the incident happened in the 6700 block of Glenmore Avenue.

The suspect claims he was cleaning a rifle in his kitchen when the gun jammed. The suspect said he then went outside to clear the jam in his backyard when he dropped the gun and it went off nearly 15 times. Police say they found bullet casings from the rifle and other guns the suspect owns at the scene. Both the casings and guns were seized by police as evidence.

Police say the St. Louis County Prosecutor's office will file charges later in the week.
