(KMOV.com) – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has signed legislation restricting use of Welfare funds by Missourians.

The new law pertains to what’s known as TANF dollars- or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

The legislation came about after a News 4 investigation uncovered rampant abuse of the program.

After it was uncovered that TANF funds were being used at strip clubs, casinos and liquor stores –among other places- lawmakers enacted new policies that ban welfare funds from being used to buy anything marketed specifically to adults.

The bill also increases the penalties for Welfare fraud, including possible felony charges. It also calls for the Department of Social Services to establish a toll-free telephone line for people to report fraud.
