ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police said a man told officers was shot while walking by the Fox Theatre in midtown St. Louis early Tuesday morning.
Police said the 24-year-old victim told officers he was walking by the theatre near the intersection of Grand and Washington around 1:30 a.m. when a vehicle passed and he heard several gunshots.
That’s when the victim felt pain in his right foot and realized he’d been shot, he told police.
Police said the victim fell to the ground and flagged down a bystander, who drove him to the hospital where he remains in stable condition.
While the man claims he was shot by someone driving by, barracades were across the street at the time, meaning Grand Boulevard was still shut down.
“The roads are closed, security at all the barricades, we’re working," said First Night spokesman Travis Howser. "This didn’t happen within this festival.”
Police confirm, based on the gunshot victims wounds, the bullet that hit him was going straight down; meaning he most likely shot himself.
At least 15 police and security officers were in the area when the shooting happened, according to First Night organizers.
Police haven’t finished their investigation but if they conclude the victim shot himself, he will face charges for filing a false police report.
