(KMOV.com) -- The owners of the Bridgeton Landfill have announced a major decision concerning the fire burning underground.

Republic Services said it will not wait to be ordered to add a new barrier between the smoldering fire and the neighboring West Lake Landfill. The West Lake Landfill is reported to have radioactive waste.

The EPA said it welcomes the barrier and looking forward to seeing the detailed plans.

The landfill is the same one where Republic Services has been working to eliminate the stench affecting residents.
